Hand by Hand

Two line song for workshops

Words and music by Sarah Pirtle © 2017, Discovery Center Music, BMI

Hand by hand we can hold on.
Heart by heart we can stay strong.

Production: Engineered by Loren Feinstein, Colrain MA.

Story of the Song

When Emily Koester and I co-led a “Mending the Web of Life” workshop at Temple Israel, we needed a song to call us back as a whole group. Following an intensive time of sharing in pairs, I sang just the chorus to a longer song. It helped cement our feeling of community.

This song works well with holding hands, holding a rope or using scarves tied together.

Workshop suggestion: What declaration do you want to make as you go forth? At the close of a workshop, you can sing this song, hold on to each other, and make declarations out loud or silently.

The Peace Rope can be viewed in this video by Janet Massuci.

The Peace Rope was created by Gabriel Fisher, age 9, Rosa Stegeman age 10, and Leora Fisher age 13 during Farm Week of Journey Camp, summer 2017. Their goal was for people to hold it and send their wishes for peace and justice. The video shows it being used at rallies. December 2017 the New Friends Interfaith Dialogue which was held at the Islamic Society in West Springfield ended with all the girls and women holding the peace rope together.
