Journey Camp Social Code
A special feature of our camp is that we use agreements to help us form a nourishing community. Every family is asked to discuss this code before the first day of camp and we review them the first morning. Campers often tell us, “We’ve never felt this safe in a group before.”
1. FRIENDLY TALKING
I agree to treat all people, including myself, in a friendly way.
2. TALK IN OUT
I agree to talk things out instead of fighting or calling names.
I will deal with the problem instead of ignoring it, unless it just makes more sense to move on.
I will listen to you with an open heart.
3. TELL SOMEONE
I agree to tell a staff member or my parents about any problems that come up so I can receive help.
4. PLEASE STOP
I agree to use the “stop” rule. If someone is doing something upsetting or unfair, I’ll say “stop” or get help asking them to stop. And if someone asks me to stop, I will stop myself and talk more about it.
5. COMPROMISE
I will be ready to listen to the needs of the whole group. If needed, I will compromise for the good of the group.
6. FRESH START
I agree to give people chances, and make a fresh start when possible so that we can all learn and grow together in a safe and helpful way.
We hope this is a set of skills that your child will be interested in developing. Over the years we’ve discovered that if a child hasn’t bought into the need for social agreements, this experience might not be the right match.
