Seed Savers

To honor seed protection, local and global.

Words and music by Sarah Pirtle © 2017, Discovery Center Music, BMI

Seed Savers, light the future.
Keep the old seeds in our hand.
Seed Savers, light the green flame.
Taking back the common land.

I hold this seed. It’s flat and small.
I plant this seed, I plant for all.
I plant for voices without a sound.
We know why our seed goes down.

I hold this seed. It’s rough and sharp.
I plant this seed into the dark.
This gift for all must live unbound.
We know why our seed goes down. Chorus

Who would place their flag upon a seed?
Who would make this seed their colony?
Who would patent it and just grow greed?
This is global piracy.

I hold this seed, it’s strong and straight.
I plant this seed, it’s not too late.
To save this force and pass it on.
We know why our seed goes down.

It pushes for the children
that they know the fight we fight.

It pushes for the courage,
for the grit and for the might.

About This Song

Suggestion: You can sing just the chorus.

The Story of the Song: Many of the songs is this collection are intended to put a spotlight on important courageous work. This was written in 2000 for Vandana Shiva’s book Biopiracy, and then reworked in 2017.

I want to let people know about the project and the documentary movie Ciclovida, focusing on saving seeds. Sound engineer Loren Feinstein’s friends Ivania Cavalcante de Alencar and Inacio Do Nasciemento founded the project and were part of the directorial team for the documentation. The movie is described: “A group of landless farmers and musicians from northeast Brazil, traverse the entire South American continent by bike in search of natural seeds and expose the devastating effects of agrobusiness.” Two brothers, Matt Feinstein and Loren co-directed, and Loren added music. You can learn more on the Ciclovida website:

For reflection: In these times we need to be as strong as seeds. We need to be as interconnected from generation to generation as seeds.

Green Flame is the name I give to the pulse of life, the enduring unstoppable green flame inside. This flame propels us to nurture and to create and gives us courage to stand up to what is life-denying.

Resources for connection: The mission of United Plant Savers is “to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitat while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come.” Rosemary Gladstar is founding president. See:
The Seed Savers Exchange of heirloom seeds emphasizes that they are saving more than seeds: It was founded in Missouri in 1975 by Diane Ott Whealy and Kent Whealy, and they have a free seed catalog.
